Website Flipping Market Snapshot: 3-28-10

The data for the Most Actives, Top Sellers, Top Selling Niches, and Most Active Site Flippers is based on the market activity at Flippa.com. As the largest and most popular marketplace for site flippers right now, the market activity there provides valuable insight on what people are buying and selling.

MOST ACTIVES

www.GTrendsAssassin.com – 62 Bids
SOLD: $40,000

Established: November 2009
Unique Visitors: 7,000/month
Net Profit: $7,500/month
Description: Sells a script that automatically generates thousands of pages of content on unused or parked domains.

Comments: While the domain and maybe even the website were established in 2009, the script itself didn’t officially launch until just January 2010. In the 2 1/2 months the product was launched, it generated over $15,000 in revenues. I can definitely see why such a product like this would be in demand. How many of us have domains just sitting around doing nothing but collecting dust? I’ll be a lot of us have domains that aren’t even parked. This script puts great use to those domains by generating content for them and monetizing the pages as well. To me, it seems like the perfect product for the professional domainer. My only beef with this auction was the hype. The owner leads buyers to believe that “$6,000/month in revenues” is almost guaranteed. It’s kind of hard to make that claim based on just 50+ days of sales. Note to buyers: NEVER buy based on what the seller claims the potential is! Determine the potential yourself and then make your offer accordingly. See auction here.

www.Plibb.com – 53 Bids
SOLD: $1,999

Established: July 2008
Unique Visitors: 4,500/month
Net Profit: $50
Description: Social news/bookmarking site.

Comments: There are so many social news/bookmarking sites out there today that I would imagine it would be hard to stand out from the crowd. Despite that challenge, Plibb managed to get a decent Alexa ranking (32,000) and generated around 4,500 unique visitors per month. However, it wasn’t monetized except for $50 per month in banner ads. I’m not sure what I’d do with a bookmarking site myself, but there were 53 bids from buyers who apparently had a plan. See auction here.

www.ProducedByNature.com – 51 Bids
SOLD: $1,200

Established: April 2008
Unique Visitors: 600/month
Net Profit: No revenue is being claimed
Description: An organic and natural foods directory with over 300 companies listed.

Comments: Directory websites have always fascinated me for some reason. In fact, not too long ago I wanted to start my own wedding photographers directory. At any rate, it’s good to see that you can make decent money creating NICHE directories. This directory only had 600 unique visitors per month and 302 companies listed in it but it still generated 51 bids and a sales price of $1,200. See auction here.

TOP SELLERS

www.GTrendsAssassin.com – $40,000
BIDS: 11

Established: November 2009
Unique Visitors: 7,000/month
Net Profit: $7,500/month
Description: Sells a script that automatically generates thousands of pages of content on unused or parked domains.

Comments: It makes sense that the most active auction would also be the top selling auction. I just hope the buyer of the website has a plan in place and didn’t buy strictly based on the seller’s claims of potential income. You never want to buy a website based on what the seller claims you’ll make. Always do your own due diligence and make sure you know what you’re doing before you buy. See auction here.

www.JustAGuyThing.com – $26,000
BIDS: 20

Established: January 2008
Unique Visitors: 144,000/month
Net Profit: $1,909/month
Description: Online men’s lifestyle magazine.

Comments: Just looking at things on paper and not doing any due diligence, I would say this was a good buy. This website was earning about $2,000 in net monthly profits and had around 144,000 unique visitors per month. And according to the seller, it wasn’t being monetized to its full potential (and I concur). With all those eye balls and over 3,000 RSS subscribers, I’d bet most Internet Marketers would be able to dramatically increase revenues in a short period of time. See auction here.

www.SMSFlick.com – $12,000
BIDS: 3

Established: February 2010
Unique Visitors: 190,000/month
Net Profit: $900/month
Description: Provides unlimited free SMS (text) messaging.

Comments: I could have used this site a few months ago as I was looking for a way to send people text messages from my computer. This website was very intriguing to me for that very reason. It just launched about a month ago and in one month it apparently received 190,000 unique visitors and a net profit of $900 from AdSense. The devil is in the details though. How did the site get so many visitors so quickly without any advertising? And how are so many text messages able to be sent for free? Regardless, it sold for over 13 times monthly net profit. See auction here.
