Website Flipping Market Snapshot: 4-11-10

The data for the Most Actives, Top Sellers, Top Selling Niches, and Most Active Site Flippers is based on the market activity at Flippa.com. As the largest and most popular marketplace for site flippers right now, the market activity there provides valuable insight on what people are buying and selling.

MOST ACTIVES

www.CushionCrazy.com – 50 Bids
SOLD: $1,450

Established: December 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 252
Net Profit/Month: $48
Description: Adsense site focused on all types of cushions.

Comments: For a long time AdSense sites seemed to be on the way out. A lot of Internet Marketers were getting rid of their AdSense sites and the whole “get rich on AdSense sites” was over. However, in the past year AdSense has been making a come back. Sites that are niche-focused and SEO-optimized with AdSense ads placed for optimal conversions are selling well on Flippa these days. This auction is a perfect example of that. It was certainly niche-focused (i.e. everything about cushions of all things), was seo-optimized and had a high CTR. What’s promising for AdSense website flippers is that this site was only getting around 250 uniques per month and making only $48/month in net profits and it still sold for 30x net monthly profits! See auction here.

www.PokerStarf.com – 48 Bids
SOLD: $3,150

Established: January 2008
Unique Visitors/Month: 7,000
Net Profit/Month: $357
Description: A website for poker players that is monetized primarily through affiliate sales.

Comments: This site was up for auction before back in December 2009 when it sold for $1,000. See auction here. Back then it didn’t have nearly as much traffic or revenue so the current seller did a great job improving the stats for this site. Unfortunately, I think the seller left at least $2,000 on the table with this sale. For starters, the seller did a terrible job “selling” the value of the site and basically copied the material from the old listing! The big mistake, however, was not turning this into a WordPress blog. The seller specified in the auction he would “transfer it” to WordPress (although I’m not sure exactly what he means by that) for $200. If he would have done that prior to listing it, he could have tagged it as a WordPress and blog site. By having those additional tags and by having a WordPress site, it would have significantly improved the value. At the very least, the seller should have tagged it as WordPress anyway and as an affiliate site. See auction here.

www.CPAVideoCoaching.com – 40 Bids
SOLD: $1,700

Established: February 2010
Unique Visitors/Month: 226
Net Profit/Month: $816
Description: Sells access to a video coaching program on CPA marketing.

Comments: CPA marketing has been hot for a while now and continues to be hot. CPA sites have been selling well on Flippa for a while now. This one was only a couple months old and was only getting just a little over 200 unique visitors per month. It was monetized selling a CPA coaching video program for only $7. The obvious first thing a buyer would do is increase the price. By simply doubling the price of the program to $14 (which I think is still too low for video coaching) you instantly double your income. There was a lot of potential with this site – assuming the video coaching was any good – so it doesn’t surprise me this one generated so many bids. See auction here.

TOP SELLERS

www.Song.ly – $50,000
BIDS: 1

Established: December 2008
Unique Visitors/Month:14,559
Net Profit/Month: No revenue claimed
Description: Provides a service allowing users to share streaming music on Twitter.

Comments: O.K., here’s the deal – create any type of site that pertains to Twitter that offers something unique and it will sell for big bucks regardless of how much money it’s making as long as it is getting traffic! I’m exaggerating a little for dramatic effect but Twitter and any thing tied to it is hot right now. Here is an example of another website that made no money but because it was tied to Twitter and was getting traffic, it sold for a pretty penny. Now granted, it had many things going for it – it was well-established, had a high PR 5, had a catchy “Web 2.0″ domain, and was getting accolades from some pretty big hitters – TechCrunch, CNET, and Mashable. See auction here.

www.DMCA.com – $40,000
BIDS: 13

Established: October 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 2,230
Net Profit/Month: $1,309
Description: Digital Millennium Copyright Act take down website.

Comments: “Was offered $20,000 just for the domain,” was what the seller had in the subtitle of this auction listing. I’ll bet he’s glad he didn’t settle for that price! This is why I love website flipping. If all the seller had was this domain with no website on it, it would have sold for $20,000. Build a quality website on it and it doubles in value! There is no doubt the domain itself had a premium value and helped significantly with the sales price but the seller built a solid business on this domain offering his services as a DMCA take down specialist. See auction here.

www.TheFinanceForums.com – $14,200
BIDS: 19

Established: April 2006
Unique Visitors/Month: 8,775
Net Profit/Month: $385/month
Description: Forum site on personal finance.

Comments: As I’ve mentioned before, forums are tough websites to monetize for most webmasters – myself included. Heck, I can’t even get my forum off the ground…lol. At any rate, this seller managed to get around $5,000 per year in AdSense revenue from this well-established forum. For anyone who knew how to monetize forums, this was a decent buy given the age and niche of the forum and the number of unique visitors it was getting per month. See auction here.

MOST ACTIVE SITE FLIPPERS

These are folks that are obviously selling on a regular basis. And if they’re doing this on a regular basis, then they must be doing well or they wouldn’t bother. You should check out their profiles and see what they’re doing. As a buyer you may find a site that interests you and as a seller, you can see what type of site flipping business they operate to give you some ideas;)

*You can view the profiles for these sellers by clicking on their names but you need to be logged into your Flippa account to view them.

TYPES OF WEBSITES MOST WATCHED BY BUYERS

This metric provides a lot of insight on the website flipping market. These are the types of websites that buyers are watching. In other words, these are the types of websites that buyers are interested in buying today. As a potential seller, this is great information because if your website falls into any of these categories, be sure to tag them as such when you list them. And if you’re a short-term flipper, these are the types of websites you should be building for sale.

    Hey Travis,

After looking at the numbers all week long, it’s good to see some interpretation and commentary to it. A great read as always.

Anyone selling starter sites would have noticed a massive drop in sales volume in the last 10 days, but this does prove that established sites, done well, are still selling.

What would be interesting is the price song.ly would have sold for if it had generated some revenue but not much – for example $200 pcm. My hunch is a site with mediocre revenue will sell for much LESS than the same site with no revenue! People are paying a premium for unrealised potential that may not exist.

      Justin:

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments. As always your analysis is spot on. You mentioned the drop in sales volume…I am noticing that week to week the bulk of new listings are start up sites. It’s been a very dry market the past several weeks for established websites.

There is no doubt people are paying a premium for potential – especially when it comes to anything with Twitter.

When are you guys launching your beta project? I want to check out your tool asap:)
