Website Flipping Market Snapshot: 5-16-10

The data for the Most Actives, Top Sellers, Top Selling Niches, and Most Active Site Flippers is based on the market activity at Flippa.com. As the largest and most popular marketplace for site flippers right now, the market activity there provides valuable insight on what people are buying and selling.

MOST ACTIVES

www.TheRichPunk.com – 39 Bids
SOLD: $1,500

Established: October 2005
Unique Visitors/Month: 2,250
Net Profit/Month: $1,250
Description: ClickBank site selling an ebook about making money online.

Comments: Hmmm, something is fishy with this one. Here we have an established site generating approximately $1,250 per month in net profits and yet it only generates 39 bids and a sale price of $1,500. What gives? Why on earth would a seller let this go for that price? And why was it only bid up to $1,500? The only thing I can think of is the offer being promoted on the site itself. It’s a very old-school, cheesy “get rich online” offer. The sales page reads right out of the year 2003 or something. On top of it, the whole “rich punk” is a take off of the infamous “Rich Jerk” guy so it’s not even original. Still, though, if this site is truly making $1,250 per month in net profits, why would it sell for only $1,500? See auction here.

www.TwitterFB.com – 38 Bids
SOLD: $710

Established: March 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 185
Net Profit/Month: $0
Description: Custom-built Twitter application for following/unfollowing.

Comments: These Twitter applications continue to be hot – although this one only generated 38 bids and a sale price of $710. The concept behind this application is intriguing and if the buyer commits to maintaining it and can monetize it effectively, then this may turn out to be a great buy. Any application that will help Twitter users gain targeted followers will be in demand. See auction here.

www.LoveHandleExercise.net – 35 Bids
SOLD: $450

Established: June 2007
Unique Visitors/Month: 1,766
Net Profit/Month: $57
Description: Weight loss niche site selling ClickBank products.

Comments: This was a website that didn’t make any money until the past 30 days the seller owned it so why did it sell for $450? For starters, it was an established website that was almost three years old. It was also a keyword-rich domain that ranked on the front page of Google for the keyword. Finally, it had a list of over 1,700 subscribers. A savvy email marketer would easily be able to more than double the $450 investment. See auction here.

TOP SELLERS

www.NoClaimsDiscount.co.uk – $95,000
BIDS: 1

Established: March 2008
Unique Visitors/Month: 15,000
Net Profit/Month: $7,700/month
Description: Insurance site monetized by ads.

Comments: This week we had another site that was shown as sold a couple weeks ago so it was the top seller for last week’s Market Snapshot but the official sold date has changed. With the change in the sale date, it is now the top seller for this Market Snapshot update. As I said in last week’s update, I’m not surprised this listing fetched as much as it did. This was an affiliate website built on an established domain that was generating around $5,000 per month in the hyper competitive insurance industry. Looking at the stats, it appears that while the domain was established in March 2008, the site didn’t start generating revenue until September 2009 but has been a solid revenue producer ever since. See auction here.

www.PSP-Themes.net – $17,000
BIDS: 1

Established: April 2007
Unique Visitors/Month: 789,146
Net Profit/Month: $900
Description: PlayStation Portable themes site monetized by ads.

Comments: This is a great example of what user-generated content can do for you. This was a site where users uploaded themes for the PlayStation portable game device. The site literally built itself. These types of sites are great when you can find them because the content generation part of the equation is taken care of for you. All you have to concentrate on is marketing the site. See auction here.

www.InstallerApps.com – $15,000
BIDS: 6

Established: November 2007
Unique Visitors/Month: 12,000
Net Profit/Month: $595
Description: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Jailbreak blog monetized by ads.

Comments: I’m going to have to get on the Apple bandwagon and either buy or build a website that promotes Apple products or products related to them. Between Apple and Twitter sites, I don’t know which is hotter these days. This site provides 3rd party apps that you can put on your iPhone, iTouch, or iPad (i.e. jailbreaking). See auction here.

TYPES OF WEBSITES MOST WATCHED BY BUYERS

This metric provides a lot of insight on the website flipping market. These are the types of websites that buyers are watching. In other words, these are the types of websites that buyers are interested in buying today. As a potential seller, this is great information because if your website falls into any of these categories, be sure to tag them as such when you list them. Thanks for the head’s up. It’s a great looking site. I’m actually working on building my own iPad site right now so I’ll have to pass. Good luck with the sale though!

Great job as usual, Travis, and interesting reading.

I bet it isn’t easy. I can imagine you spend huge amounts of time compiling these posts. You should get Flippa or someone to pay you for the effort ;) because they certainly are useful and I, for one, see a lot of value in them.

I wish I could strike some kind of agreement with Flippa! I’ve talked to Luke about it before but I didn’t get too far. I suspect they figure since they’re the only player in town right now and the bulk of my data relies on them, they don’t need to pay me;( What I need to do is launch my own marketplace:)

Thanks for stopping by again, Clinton. I need to get back to your forum sometime this week. Take care.

I’m glad somebody likes them:) It isn’t easy putting this stuff together every week but I enjoy doing it! Be sure to check out the Past Website Sales section on this site. It’s basically a look at the Market Snapshot for the entire month. It’s pretty interesting data.
