The data for the Most Actives, Top Sellers, Top Selling Niches, and Most Active Site Flippers is based on the market activity at Flippa.com. As the largest and most popular marketplace for site flippers right now, the market activity there provides valuable insight on what people are buying and selling.
MOST ACTIVES
www.1st-Retirement.com – 49 Bids
SOLD: $950
Established: September 2003
Unique Visitors/Month: 1,995
Net Profit/Month: $30
Description: Lead generation site about retirement monetized by AdSense and selling leads.
Comments: Offline marketing continues to be hot. This was a well-established site in the retirement finance niche. At one time the seller used the site to generate leads for financial advisors, lawyers, and taxation experts. For now, the site is just sitting there making a small amount of AdSense income. Given this niche, the age of the site, and the popularity of offline marketing, I would have thought this site would have sold for more. See auction here.
www.GetYourSponsor.com – 44 Bids
SOLD: $3,250
Established: January 2007
Unique Visitors/Month: 3,700
Net Profit/Month: $110
Description: Site to help people find new sponsors monetized by AdSense.
Comments: I’m always intrigued about all the different ways people make money with their websites. That’s what I love the most about website flipping – just observing what others are doing! This site was a place for people to post their sponsorship needs (i.e. we are a softball team looking for a local business to sponsor us). Businesses can search through these sponsorship requests and fulfill them. What a unique concept. See auction here.
www.BestHairLossProduct.biz – 39 Bids
SOLD: $430
Established: August 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 1,176
Net Profit/Month: $23
Description: Group of 8 AdSense sites in hair loss, jewelry, men’s health, and household products niches.
Comments: Nothing about this auction impressed me. Here you had a portfolio of 8 WordPress sites that cumulatively were only making $23/month in revenue. I’m not a big fan of .biz and .org TLD’s either. What cracks me up is when sellers say things like, “These websites are totally on autopilot. Zero hours work are required,” like this seller claimed. Sure, you could buy these and do nothing and make $23/month!! A lot of buyers were impressed, however, as this auction generated 39 bids and was the third most active auction. See auction here.
TOP SELLERS
www.EWallpapers.eu – $145,000
BIDS: 1
Established: N/A
Unique Visitors/Month: 1,100,000
Net Profit/Month: $5,995
Description: Desktop wallpapers site monetized by ads and premium membership payments.
Comments: I smell something fishy – again. I’m seeing more and more of these suspicious listings on Flippa where a site has little to no comments and then suddenly it sells with one bid for six figures. This one especially looked suspicious because it was listed on August 12th and then supposedly sold the next day on Friday the 13th for $145,000 (and had only one bid). Then it was immediately relisted on Friday the 13th and then sold again the next day for $145,000??? If the numbers are legit, I can see the site selling for as much as it did but the sequence of events and the lack of comments and bidding have me thinking this site didn’t actually sell. See auction here.
www.HousekeepingHelp.com – $40,500
BIDS: 38
Established: May 2004
Unique Visitors/Month: 6,000
Net Profit/Month: $1,779
Description: Classifieds advertising website for housekeepers monetized by AdSense.
Comments: Now we have something to talk about – a well-established, high-quality site that I’m confident actually sold (unless of course the buyer didn’t follow through – which has become an issue with these big dollar auctions lately). This seller has had two nice paydays. He sold another classified’s site on Flippa back in July for $42,500 (NannyNeeded.com). This classifieds site was very similar in age, uniques, and monthly revenue – and it fetched about the same amount of money too. See auction here.
www.CommunityFundingVentures.com – $30,000
BIDS: 5
Established: March 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 0
Net Profit/Month: $3,813
Description: Site selling a community rewards program.
Comments: When I first saw this site for sale I had no interest in it because the niche bored me so I didn’t even give the auction attention – until it sold. After reading through the auction, I think the seller left a lot of money on the table. If the numbers are all legit, the seller NETTED almost $46,000 alone in 2009. If you read through the auction carefully, you’ll see this was a legitimate, solid business for sale. So why did it generate only 5 bids and sell for only $30,000?
For one, the seller didn’t use the right tags. Instead of using “membership” as a tag that only had 13 buyers watching, the seller should have used “established” which had almost three times the buyers watching. More importantly, though, the seller’s auction description was far too detailed. Those details would have been better shared via private messaging to interested buyers. By including them in the auction listing, it was too overwhelming and hard to understand what exactly was for sale. The seller should have spent more time explaining how the revenue was earned in 2009 (on a high level) and demonstrating the potential revenue moving forward. By keeping it simple, I think more buyers would have been interested and this site would have sold for a lot more money! See auction here.
TYPES OF WEBSITES MOST WATCHED BY BUYERS
This metric provides a lot of insight on the website flipping market. These are the types of websites that buyers are watching. In other words, these are the types of websites that buyers are interested in buying today. As a potential seller, this is great information because if your website falls into any of these categories, be sure to tag them as such when you list them. And if you’re a short-term flipper, these are the types of websites you should be building for sale.
AdSense: 53 buyers watching
WordPress: 52 buyers watching
Ecommerce: 52 buyers watching
