Website Flipping Market Snapshot: 9-5-10

The data for the Most Actives, Top Sellers, Top Selling Niches, and Most Active Site Flippers is based on the market activity at Flippa.com. As the largest and most popular marketplace for site flippers right now, the market activity there provides valuable insight on what people are buying and selling.

MOST ACTIVES

www.AppSensei.com – 54 Bids
SOLD: $1,520

Established: April 2010
Unique Visitors/Month: 25,340
Net Profit/Month: $165
Description: Site on iPhone apps monetized by AdSense.

Comments: This was a website that actually didn’t go live until mid July 2010 – not in April 2010 as shown as that was just the time the domain was registered. This was a WordPress autoblog monetized by AdSense. If the traffic stats were legit, this was a decent buy given that it was generating over 25,000 unique visitors per month and already making close to $200 in net profit. See auction here.

www.SurfPeople.net – 31 Bids
SOLD: $3,600

Established: September 2008
Unique Visitors/Month: 60,000
Net Profit/Month: $900
Description: Free social networking site monetized by ads.

Comments: Unless I had deep pockets or a totally unique “social concept,” I don’t know that I’d buy a social networking site myself as they are a dime a dozen, but I’m in the minority as these social networking sites with good traffic seem to do very well and this one was no different. According to the seller, it was generating over 60,000 unique monthly visitors and was making close to $1,000 per month in ad revenue. What was interesting about this auction was that the seller had listed it a 3rd time. The first time it sold for $5,100 but the buyer never paid. Then the second time around the auction ended at $2,600 without a winner (the reserve price wasn’t met). The third time around it obviously sold but the seller decided to let it go for whatever price as it didn’t have a reserve on it. See auction here.

www.VoloStroller.com – 30 Bids
SOLD: $497

Established: April 2010
Unique Visitors/Month: 600
Net Profit/Month: $25
Description: Site on baby strollers monetized by AdSense and Amazon sales.

Comments: This was a typical startup website but there are a few things worth noting. The seller is a prolific seller of startups on Flippa. She is one of the few sellers who can consistently get $200-$500 per startup. If you are thinking about selling startup websites on Flippa, study this auction and all her previous auctions. She knows how to build quality startups that buyers want and she does an excellent job of putting her auctions together. You can learn from her. See auction here.

TOP SELLERS

www.EmailTemplates.org – $63,000
BIDS: 16

Established: November 2008
Unique Visitors/Month: 3,000
Net Profit/Month: $8,355
Description: Site selling email templates monetized by affiliate income, ads, and custom design work.

Comments: I know I’ve said this before, but it’s auctions like this that make reporting on website flipping so interesting. I’m always fascinated by the creativity and business know-how of some webmasters. This seller was a designer by trade so he started a website promoting WordPress-based email newsletter templates as an affiliate. He further monetized the site with ads and site rentals. He further monetized it by offering his design services to customize the templates he was promoting. The end result was a business generating over $8,000 per month in net revenue and allowing him to quit his day job. He didn’t do to bad on the sale of the business either:) See auction here.

www.TheUnionDaily.com – $40,000
BIDS: 4

Established: July 2010
Unique Visitors/Month: 12,000
Net Profit/Month: $10,000
Description: Affiliate news site and Facebook page monetized by affiliate income.

Comments: How much is a Facebook page with over 400,000 fans targeting mostly women worth? Answer: $40,000! While the primary website for sale was a pseudo-news site centered around affiliate marketing, the main thing for sale was the Facebook page with all the fans it had. The majority of the 12,000 unique monthly visitors the news site received was from the Facebook page. See auction here.

www.MidUpload.com – $12,000
BIDS: 18

Established: May 2009
Unique Visitors/Month: 600,000
Net Profit/Month: $1,000
Description: File hosting/sharing site monetized by ads and premium membership payments.

Comments: File/image hosting sites always seem to be popular among buyers. If the numbers claimed by the seller check out, the buyer did o.k. paying only 12x monthly net profit. See auction here.

TYPES OF WEBSITES MOST WATCHED BY BUYERS

This metric provides a lot of insight on the website flipping market. These are the types of websites that buyers are watching. In other words, these are the types of websites that buyers are interested in buying today. As a potential seller, this is great information because if your website falls into any of these categories, be sure to tag them as such when you list them. And if you’re a short-term flipper, these are the types of websites you should be building for sale.

AdSense: 58 buyers watching

Ecommerce: 56 buyers watching

WordPress: 53 buyers watching

Ya, I thought so too. This is the first time I’ve seen a Facebook page for sale that has generated so much interest. And I agree with you that if people can build quality Facebook pages with REAL fans (that are highly responsive), then for sure you’ll see more and you’ll see them selling for higher prices too.

The Union Daily auction was an interesting one. The auction sold for only 4X monthly earnings, but I suspect this was because it was an odd hybrid Facebook page/website which made it more difficult to predict future earnings.

I’d be willing to bet we’ll see more Facebook pages come up for sale in the future. If you can find a way of monetizing some of your Facebook fans you could do very well.
