It’s “Official” – Wednesday Is The Best Day To List Your Website For Sale

In a previous post I hypothesized that it didn’t really matter when you listed your website for sale on Flippa as long as your website had something of value – whether it was traffic, revenue, a unique concept, a premium domain, or all of the above. It just doesn’t matter when you list because if it has value it will sell, I said.

Having said that, I also suggested that it made sense to give your auction listings maximum exposure by having your auctions run through at least one full weekend. I define a full weekend as Friday night through Sunday night so if you were running a 3-day auction, you should list on Thursday or Friday evening to cover a full weekend. If you run a 5-day auction, you should list on any evening between Tuesday and Friday to cover a full weekend. O.K., I think you get the point…lol.

Well the May sold data is in and it appears there is an “official” best day to list your website for sale and that day is Wednesday. Check out this graph:

As you can see, of the total 1,460 successfully sold listings for the month of May, 261 of them were LISTED on Wednesday. Friday was a close second with 250 listed. Overall, the weekdays had the most listings while the weekends had the least.

Now that we know that Wednesday and Friday are the best days to list – according to this data anyway – wouldn’t it be great if we knew what auction durations were best for those same two days? Well, you’re in luck because I analyzed that data too as part of the analysis I did for my post about the optimal auction durations.

As I discovered in my main analysis for that post, the auction durations for Wednesday and Friday sold listings were the same – that seven day auctions or less are ideal. Here is a graph that shows the “days on market” for new listings on Wednesdays that sold:

As you can see, the majority of the sold listings were on the market for less than 7 days and by far most were on the market for only 3 days. Here is what the graph looks like for Friday:

While the bulk of the listings on Fridays sold in 7 days or less, most actually sold within 1-3 days.

Bottom Line:

For the most success on Flippa, list your websites for sale on Wednesday or Friday and run them for 7 days or less!

Awesome research Travis! This is exactly what i needed. I think listing websites for 3 days puts scarcity on your listing.

Hey Travis, you forgot to publish when it is best time to start an auction. I assume early afternoon?

Seems it’s more important the time it ends rather than starts right?

Actually it will make more sense to ask you at which hour to upgrade to featured listing to draw more eyeballs.

That’s a good question. I’ve found right at the beginning or in the last 24 hours to be the best times depending on the value of the site.

I heard that early noon or early evening are good times. Also it could be better to end listing in the night before morning when people have to get up early for job. Though this technique is a bit harsh and exploits on people’s tiredness, i think the fact is that they know that they must win auction as soon as possible because they will have to get up early will draw a bidding war.

Let me know what you think.

I’ve actually been doing this since you posted this and it has worked out great. I now aim to do my listings on Wednesdays and Fridays, but I don’t always make it but I do make sure they at least end on those days and get a full week-end in.

Thanks again for all the great tips Travis!

That’s awesome to hear! My goal is to do this analysis again towards the end of the year to see if Wednesday is still the most popular day to list. And remember, there is no hard and fast rules here. If listing on Wednesday isn’t producing the best results, try a different day and see what happens. It’s all about testing:)

Interesting data for sure. I’ll be sure to list my next flip on a Wednesday and have it run for a week.

Ya, I thought the data was interesting as well. I’ll be posting my findings today on what auction durations were the most popular. Good luck with your next flip. And congrats on your Wired Magazine cover.
